Hamilton County Courthouse

Hamilton County, one of Florida's oldest, was formed in 1827 and has a rich history of many courthouses.  Various records show the first courthouse was in Micco in 1828 and a second in Wallburg in 1836.  Why the move was made is unknown nor is it known just where Wallburg was located.  That courthouse may have been destroyed by a tornado.  In 1838, the site was changed to Jasper, then known as Pulaski.  A large courthouse was built in Jasper in 1856 for the sum of $2,000.  This was said to be a handsome two story building surrounded by oaks.   In 1891, a new brick courthouse was built, now costing $15,900, and it included a windmill and a well.  This courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1929 and rebuilt in 1932.  In 1955 and 1968, the courthouse was remodeled, placing the courtrooms and other offices all on the ground floor.
